SENIOR MUSICIANSHIP PROGRAMME Cottage School of Music - Senior's Musicianship Programme for students aged 5 to 18 provides the perfect foundation for your child's musical development. These fun-filled music classes explore the fundamental elements of music through games, singing, rhythm, improvisation, listening, movement and dance. These classes place an emphasis on the development, creativity and self-expression of each child using music drawn from a wide range of cultures. The classes are taken by Micheál McCarthy, a leading expert in the area of Aural and Choral Training. A graduate of the world-renowned Kodály Institute in Hungary, Micheál has developed a unique teaching approach which is ever-dynamic, varied and stimulating. Cottage School of Music's Junior, Senior, and High School programmes have established a reputation as being amongst the finest music programmes in Australia. Cottage School of Music's Musicianship Programme is linked to Cottage's Choral Programme.This exceptional program offers classes to children aged 5-16, and provides expert vocal training suited to children's voices. The Choral Programme, which was established in Perth in 2002, is regarded by many professional musicians as one of the finest choral programmes in Australia. The Cottage Holiday Music Programme also provides children with the opportuniy of experiencing our programme during the school holiday period. |

Our programme promotes learning through active participation, movement, games, rhythm and singing. Aural /MusicianshipTraining is the foundation on which a solid musical education is built; it develops the skills of the musical mind, i.e. pitch, rhythm, literacy, form, left/right brain skills, gross motor skills, co-ordination, imagination, creativity and memory. We also offer a special programme for High School students preparing for TEE music and/or auditions for tertiary music institutions. |

"Today there is much talk of overburdening the students. It is true that the musician finds burdensome the learning of subjects whose direct use in his career he cannot see. If he realized, however, how much easier it is to learn every music subject, and how much time is won if he first trains himself to be a quick and sure reader, he would not rest day or night until he had achieved this. To teach a child an instrument without first giving him preparatory training and without developing singing, reading and dictating to the highest level along with the playing is to build upon sand." (Zoltán Kodály, 1953). "Children's singing games allow a more profound insight than anything else into the primeval age of folk music. Singing connected with movements and action is a much more ancient, and, at the same time, more complex phenomenon than is a simple song. .... In the same way as the child's development repeats in brief the evolution of mankind, his forms of music represent a history of music; indeed they afford a glimpse into the prehistoric period of music. From the reiteration of the smallest motif, comprising but a couple of notes, we can observe all grades of musical development up to the average stage of the European folksong...
